A black/white gobo blank is a round borosilicate glass coated with a thin film metallic layer.
Drix makes these blanks unpatterned. We sell these blanks to companies who create an image into the thin film coating.
We generally use Schott borofloat 33 glass with a thickness of 1.10mm to produce the B/W gobo blanks.
Alternatively, we can offer these gobo’s on borofloat 33 glass with a different thickness, like 0.70mm, 1.00, 1.75mm, 2.00mm, 2.75mm, 3.30mm
The gobo’s are available in all sizes ranging from 11mm to 150mm round.
We keep a fair stock all popular sizes. Nonstock sizes can generally be made within one week – call us for urgent orders.
Upon request we can also make nonround shapes: rounds with a flat side, square shapes, rectangular shapes, etc…
All glass up to 66mm is edge grinded. All larger sizes are cut.
In contrast to many optical coating companies, Drix sizes the glass prior to coating.
In this way, we avoid any mechanical sizing step once the thin coating has been deposited.
This method also allows us to manufacture gobo’s with almost zero pinhole count and a coating sitting over the edge, with improved adhesion and no edge light leakage.
The black/white blanks are offered with different coating opions: reflective, matted, protected, black coatings.
Most of these gobo’s can be supplied with a photoresist coating for photochemical etching, or without photoresist for laser ablation.
With a gobo, there must always be a reflective side to the lamp, in order avoid absorption of light energy, and another side to the objective,
which can either be reflective, diffuse or dark.

Operating
principle of reflective gobo’s
(Applies to process 06/07)
The coating on the glass side reflects 90% of the light typically.
The other side reflects approx 90% of the light as well.
In this way the gobo is reversible.
Operating priciple
of matted gobo’s:
(Applies to process 00/01/02/11)
The coating on the glass side reflects 90% of the light typically.
The matted coating diffuses the light which is reflected back for the objective to the gobo.
Less than 10% (@550nm) of the light originally reflected by the objective will be bounced back to the objective.
In this way, under the narrow viewing angle of the objective, this matted surface is very dark.
At the same time, because the matted surface absorbs little of the backreflected light (it diffuses the light instead into the black housing of the projector), the gobo has little heat load.
This technology allows morphing with high power projectors, where two gobo’s are projected in series, and were the light of one gobo is reflected upon the other gobo.

Operating
principle of reverse black gobo’s:
(Applies to process 22/23/29)
The outward coated side reflects 90% of the light typically.
The coating in the glass side reflects less than 8% (@630nm) and has a dark blue appearance.
In this way, the light originally reflected by the objective will largely be absorbed by the gobo.
This technology offers superior contrast either as stand alone gobo’s or in conjunction with added colour glass.
Note: this type of material is not recommended for theatrical projectors with little or no cooling.

Operating
principle of reverse black gobo’s with a dichroic mirror:
(Applies to process 27)
The outward coated side reflects 99% of the light typically.
The coating in the glass side reflects less than 8% (@630nm) and has a dark blue appearance.
In this way, the light originally reflected by the objective will largely be absorbed by the gobo.
This technology offers superior contrast and is capable of handling high power density luminaires.
Since March 2018 we supply process 27 in an etchable version also.
Operating
principle of forward black matted gobo’s:
(Applies to process 49)
The coating on the glass side reflects 90% of the light typically.
The black matted coating diffuses the light which is reflected back for the objective to the gobo.
Less than 1% (@550nm) of the light originally reflected by the objective will be bounced back to the objective.
This low reflectance is obtained by combining a diffused coating which is absorbing at the same time.
While this dark diffused coating is capable of cancelling almost all undesired light reflections, it is fragile at the same time.
If the dark layer is scratched, the underlying reflective aluminum layer will become visible.
Therefore we sell gobo’s with this coating only for dedicated applications where such an extreme dark layer is required and where proper handling is guaranteed.
General part number decoder for black/white gobos:
PPTTSSSSAR
PP= Process number
TT=Glass thickness in 0.1mm units
SSSS=Glass diameter in 0.1mm units
A: blank = diameter tolerance +0/-0.3mm, A= tolerance +0/-0.2mm
R: blank = not resisted, R = Resisted
Eg: 01110375R = Process 01 (Heavy matted), 1.1mm thickness, 37.5mm diameter +0/-0.3mm, with photoresist
Eg: 29110279 = Process 29 (Revers black protected), 1,1mm thickness, 27.9mm diameter +0/-0.3mm, no photoresist
Please note: we always work with a negative tolerance only. We never make the diameter larger than the specified value to avoid stress on the glass or failure to fit into the projector.
Drix manufactures patternable colour gobo’s in various round sizes.
These sizes have been chosed to match a B/W K-part and allow the whole assembly to fit into one of our rings.
The standard thickness of our colour glass is 0.3mm.
As of 01/01/2018, we are also supplying colour gobo’s on glass with a thickness of 0.1mm.
Upon request, we can make colour gobo’s on different glass thicknesses.
We stock glass of 0.1mm, 0.3mm, 0.4mm, 0.55mm, 0,7mm, 1.1mm, 1.75mm and upwards.
We size the glass before coating deposition, to ensure low pinhole count.
However, this way of operating forces us to use dedicated tooling for the production of the colour glass.
In case you need different sizes, we have two options:
1) Make different tooling (lead time : 2 weeks). Since this required CAD design work and lasercutting of the stainless steel holders, this option is only suitable for large or repeat orders
2) We can deposit on large glass sheets and exceptionally cut onto rounds after coating deposition. This is suitable only for colour gobo’s intended for laser ablation.
We produce the colour coatings either tuned for photochemical etching, or tuned for laser ablation.
Since we have control over the process (now and then we don’t and then we need to dump everything), we can offer the coating with a hardness tuned to your application.
All colours are specified by the T=50% points (the point on the curve where the light transmission is 50%)
All colours have two T=50% points. For many colours, the 2nd point falls in the UV or IR range and therefore it is not mentioned.
Colours like magenta and green have two T=50% points in the
visible range, so both are specified.BLUE
Standard production tolerance = +/-8nm
Upon request, we can produce to tighter tolerance.

Cannnot find what you are looking for? Just ask!
Drix can design and produce virtually any colour.
If the colour you need is almost identical to one of the colours listed, and we just need to pull the T=50% point to a slightly lower or higher wavelength,
this is easy to do, but we will required you to buy a complete production batch. A complete production batch is in the order of 150pcs for 20mm
to 16pcs for 80mm gobo’s. Please enquire for the conditions.
If you need a custom colour, please specify the T(50%) wavelength(s), and we will design the colour.
Alternatively, you can send us the transmission spectum over the visible range.
If you do not know the cutoff wavelengths or if you do not have the spectrum, you can always send us an existing sample of the colour.
Then we will measure it and design an identical colour in our process.
We cannot use RGB data since there is no deterministic conversion of RGB to a transmisson spectrum.
The maximum square size we can produce is 160x160mm.
The maximum round size we can produce is 220mm. The colour near the edge may vary slightly, we guarantee colour uniformity over a diameter of 200mm
Our colour glass is made with evaporation technology, which mandates that the glass is upside down in the vacuum chamber.
We highly prefer to side the glass before depositing the colour.
The advantage is that we do not need to make mechanical processing like cutting or grinding on the final product.
The disadvantage is that we need a holder for every glass side.
Currently we have holders for these sizes:
15mm, 20mm, 23mm, 25mm, 27mm, 29mm, 30mm, 31mm, 31.5mm, 31.9mm, 34mm, 41mm, 45mm, 48mm, 64mm, 78mm, 80mm,
115mm, 120mm, 126mm, 150mm, 174mm
If you want to order glass in a different size, we need to make a new holder set. To justify this cost, we require a minimum and preferably repeat order.
Attention: due to glass bending, the maximum diameter on 0.1mm glass is 80mm
We do not charge engineering costs for developing a new colour, but since the development of a new colour takes a full day of design work and requires
a second day with multiple testruns with checks and further optimizations, we can do this for large or returning orders only.
Drix supplies black anodized aluminum rings for mounting either B/W gobo’s into a ring, or for mounting CMYK gobo’s into a ring.
The finished product offers a more professional look and is more robust for handling by the end-user.
Some theatrical projectors do not accept glass gobo’s for direct mounting. This can be solved using a suitable ring.
The production of these rings is done by a subcontractor in
If a size is not in stock, the lead time is generally 6 weeks.
We can supply non-standard rings (please send your drawing) with a moq of 200cs per design.

Support products for gobo manufacture
Consumables for the production of imaged gobo’s:
Nitrile gloves S, M, L, XL (per 100pcs)
Cleanroom wipes 230x230mm (per 300pcs)
Silicone rubber glue 100g
Chrome etchant (100g solid, dissolvable in de-ionized water)
We also offer a suitable exposure unit for copying a film image onto a gobo - Price 3000 euro!
This exposure unit creates a uniform beam of collimated light in the UV/Blue range.
It is automated with intensity sensors and lamp/shutter control
The beam diameter is 150mm
This exposure unit is also suitable for exposing the photoresist of high density printed circuit board and thin film electronic circuits
If you need anything else not mentioned here, please ask.
Sometimes we have the product you need. Otherwise we can often direct you to a supplier.
Please note that we do not sell Aluminum etchant or Hydrofluoric Acid (HF). We suggest that you source these from a local supplier.
If we need to send a bottle of liquid etchant it must be packed safely and according to regulations, which needs to be done by an external party, and this is very expensive.
Drix supplies animation wheels.
Basically this is a round glass with a centre hole, with a coating applied.
We make the outer diameter and the hole size upon specification.
Animation wheels can be made on glass with a thickness of 0.7mm, 1.1mm, 1.75mm, 2.0mm, 2.75mm, 3.30mm
Typical hole sizes are 8 to 20mm. We can obtain a tolerance of -0/+0.1mm on the hole size. We never make the hole smaller than the specified value.
We have the necessary tooling to make the holes without cracks, so reliable operation is guaranteed.
Typical outer diameters are 100 to 200mm.
Drix sizes the glass and drills the hole prior to coating deposition.
We can make black/white coatings on animation wheels up to 180mm
We can make colour coatings on animation wheels up to 210mm
Basically all stadard technical filters for the UV/Visible/NIR range are available:
- Low pass filters (eg: IR blockers)
- High pass filters (eg: UV filters)
- Bandpass filters
- Notch filters
Send your specifications to obtain a quote.
Drix offers low cost mask plates in 6x6 inch (152.4x152.4mm) format with these coatings:
- Reflective aluminum
- Dark aluminum (black side to glass)
- Matted aluminum (diffuse coating away from glass)
- Chrome
- Dark chrome (black side to glass)
These mask plates can either be resisted or non-resisted.
The standard substrate material is unpolished Schott Borofloat 33 with a thickness of 1.1mm
For alternative substrate materials and thicknesses, please call.
Drix offers a suitable exposure unit to copy film images to a gobo.
This exposure unit generates well collimated UVA/blue light,
allowing to copy the film image onto the gobo without loss of resolution,
even if there is some space between the film and the gobo.
In this way, there is no need to apply force to the film or gobo,
allowing exposure without risk of damaging the film or gobo.
It is the perfect solution for pinhole-free imaging.
